BioBlitz Fun Day is scheduled for May 21, 2016 from 8 am - 4:30 pm at Assateague Island National Seashore.

Grab your magnifying glass and unleash your inner scientist as you explore nature at Assateague Island National Seashore! On May 21, national parks across the country, including Assateague Island National Seashore, will participate in the National Parks BioBlitz. BioBlitz is a fun, fast-paced biological survey of a park's creepers and crawlers, plants and pollinators, mammals and more! The National Park Service is celebrating its 100th birthday with more than 100 BioBlitzes across the country.

The Assateague Island National Seashore BioBlitz Fun Day event begins at 8 am on May 21, 2016 with registration in the North Beach Parking Lot Picnic Pavilion. During registration, participants can sign up for teams to help find and identify as many species as possible. Teams of up to 20 people will include: birds, bayside aquatic sampling, reptiles and amphibians, plants, shells, beach intertidal zone sampling and butterflies and flying insects.

The day will be divided into two exploration sessions;the morning session begins at 9 am and the afternoon session begins at 1 pm.

Sunscreen, hats, insect repellent, clothing that can get dirty, shoes that can get muddy or wet and/or boots are recommended. Binoculars are encouraged, but not necessary to participate. Participants are also encouraged to join the Assateague BioBlitz project on iNaturalist.org and record their discoveries during the day using the iNaturalist app. The event is free to the public, however entrance fees will be in effect.
