  • Article 2: Decade-Long Effort to Preserve Civil War Battlefield a Triumph for Historic Preservation

    In 2021, the American Battlefield Protection Program awarded its largest grant to date to the American Battlefield Trust. Partnering with Virginia’s Departments of Conservation and Recreation and Historic Resources, they will preserve several centuries of occupation and struggle on the Williamsburg Civil War Battlefield.   • Article 3: Site of Total War in Civil War Now Preserved for Conservation

    Thanks to a Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant from the American Battlefield Protection Program, Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation will preserve 123 acres of the 1864 Civil War Battle of Tom’s Brook. Once the site of the Union’s total war campaign known as “The Burning,” the land will now become a site of conservation and recreation. Along with their partners, VA DCR will provide access to the property with trails and historic signage. Read more

  • Article 4: “Hallowed Ground” at the Battle of Piedmont Now Protected

    Thanks to a Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant from the American Battlefield Protection Program, Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation will preserve three acres of the 1864 Civil War Battle of Piedmont. Along with their partners, VA DCR will provide access to the property with trails and historic signage. Read more

  • Article 5: Port Republic Battlefield “Coaling” Property Now Protected

    Once a site of fierce fighting the Civil War, the Port Republic Battlefield was threatened by residential developments. Thanks to a Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has acquired 107 acres of this threatened battlefield and intend to preserve it and provide visitor access to the property.   • Article 6: Commemorating the War for Independence at Great Bridge

    Thanks to a Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant from the American Battlefield Protection Program, Virginia’s Department of Conservation Recreation was able to preserve a portion of the Great Bridge Battlefield. Though small in acreage, the site bears witness to the experiences of African American soldiers during the American Revolutionary War. Read more

  • Article 7: Conserving History and the Environment in Chattanooga

    Thanks to a Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant from the American Battlefield Protection Program, the City of Chattanooga, Tennessee will preserve over three hundred acres of the 1864 Civil War Chattanooga Battlefield. Along with their partners, the American Battlefield Trust and Reflection Riding nature center, they will ensure the protection of this rich natural and historical resource for generations. Read more
