Administrative History Note

Recognizing the value of photography for education, interpretation, and publicity, the National Park Service (NPS) established a formal photography program in 1929 when George A. Grant was hired as the first chief photographer. Grant’s work featured traditional photographic methods which created negatives from which prints could be made. Lantern slide programs featuring national parks were commercially available from about 1900 but in the late 1920s parks began to develop their own lantern slide collections to illustrate lectures and other programs. Beginning in the mid-1930s Works Progress Administration (WPA) artists working at the NPS Western Museum Laboratories (WML) in Berkeley, California, hand-colored lantern slides for parks.

Transparencies consist of semi-transparent positive images on glass or plastic film supports. Although transparencies were printed on sheet film in similar sizes to negatives, they were commonly placed between glass or in cardboard or plastic mounts to protect them during handling and while being viewed through slide projectors. Invented as 35mm motion picture film in 1935, Kodak Kodachrome and Agfacolor Neu color slide films debuted in 1936. Although lantern slides remained popular until World War II, some parks began using Kodachrome film to create glass-mounted slides in the late 1930s, foreshadowing a change coming to the NPS after the war.

In January 1939 the WML Miscellaneous Products Available to National Parks and Monuments catalog noted that “the new kodaslides are replacing colored lantern slides in some parks. Most of the parks using this new film are sending the processed rolls to us, along with a sufficient supply of cover glass, tape, etc., with a request that they be mounted here, so that there is an increased amount of this work being done by us.” The WML provided this service for free to parks along with custom-made wooden Kodaslide boxes to store them. The catalog noted, “These Kodachrome carrying cases are proving especially useful in those parks that have discarded colored lantern slides for kodaslides.”

Kodak Ektachrome was introduced in 1946. Unlike Kodachrome, which required a complex development process, Ektachrome could be processed quickly and easily in a simple chemical bath, making it more accessible to amateur photographers. Fujichrome, another popular slide film, was introduced in 1955. The slide format became increasingly popular with the NPS and the public throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Families documented their vacations with slide films to share with friends upon their return. Slide projectors became common in schools and homes. The NPS also moved away from glass-mounted slides in favor of cardboard or plastic mounted slides for public programs.

In 1955 the NPS began its 10-year Mission 66 program to improve visitor amenities in parks, including visitor centers and amphitheaters which provided new venues to present public programs. Although the use of motion picture films and other interpretive media expanded during this period, the interpretive slide show remained popular to the 1990s. Over the decades parks developed their own slide files to provide images to support these programs. The increasing popularity and affordability of digital photography ended the viability of large-scale use of slide films in the NPS and with the general public. In 2009 Kodak stopped Kodachrome production. Ektachrome was discontinued in 2012 but was returned to production 2017. Fujifilm continues to offer slide films. Today these slide films are more popular with wildlife and landscape photographers than the public.

Computer software to develop presentations using digital images was introduced in 1987. The NPS eventually adapted to this approach making park slide files obsolete. Many images were scanned for use in these new public presentations and physical slide files were eliminated. The slides in this collection represent only a small selection of what was once the dominant imagery used by the NPS in its interpretive messaging, resource management practices, and publicity.
