Fire Ban in Effect Along River Corridor

In accordance with Utah Interagency State-wide Fire Restrictions, and under the authority of Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 1, Section 1.5 (a)(1), and pursuant to 36 CFR 2.13(c), the following fire restrictions apply immediately, and will remain in effect until further notice along the river corridors of the Colorado and Green Rivers within Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park.

1. Setting, building, maintaining, attending, or using open fire of any kind is prohibited, except by devices fueled by petroleum or liquid propane gas (LPG) products are allowed in all locations. Charcoal may be used under the following conditions and all conditions must be met:

  • Charcoal may only be used during meal preparation and must be extinguished with water immediately after use.
  • A person must be assigned to continually monitor the charcoal fire.
  • Enough buckets filled with water must be immediately available to extinguish any wildfires that may result from your charcoal fire.
  • Charcoal fires must be completely contained in a metal fire pan.
  • Fire pans may only be used on sandy beaches or in areas of minimal ground devoid of vegetation.
  • The fire pan must be as close to the river as possible and 25 feet from any vegetation.
  • Charcoal fires are not permitted during windy conditions.

2. Smoking is prohibited, except within an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared to mineral soil.

3. Discharging, or using any kind of fireworks, tracer ammunition, or other incendiary devices in any location on federal lands is prohibited. (Note that these acts are always prohibited on federal lands.)

4. Operating a generator, or other types of small engines without an approved and working spark arrester. All other fire restrictions, or necessary exemptions to the restrictions, will be handled through local “permits” issued by the responsible agency(ies) for that purpose (Not to include motorboat engines).
