The "Connect Trails to Parks" program of the National Park Service (NPS) has granted $100,000 for planning and coordination of the Lions Park Trail and Transportation Hub. Acting NPS Director Dan Wenk made the announcement last week. The project at Lions Park was one of only five projects funded nationwide in the first round of grants. Many local groups have long worked to develop Lions Park as a trail and transportation hub. Key partners in the effort include Grand County, Moab City, the Bureau of Land Management, Trail Mix, and the Moab Trails Alliance. The grant announced last week was prepared by the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) Program. RTCA staff provides technical assistance to community groups and local, state, and federal agencies working to protect natural and historic areas and enhance close-to-home recreational opportunities. The funds will be used to develop a master plan, a natural resources restoration plan, and to develop construction drawings. The "Connect Trails to Parks" was established during the 40th anniversary of the National Trails System in 2008. Because of its proximity to both the Old Spanish National Historic Trail and the Slickrock National Recreation Trail, the Lions Park project was well suited for the grant program |
