Bayfield, WI – Due to bear activity, a temporary closure is in place on Outer Island. The closure includes all day-use and overnight use, including visiting the light station grounds. One resident bear is frequenting public areas on Outer Island and has exhibited behavior that indicates it is not afraid of humans. The closure is in effect beginning 4:00 pm on August 16, 2019.

The closure will be re-evaluated weekly to determine when it is appropriate to reopen the island to day-use and overnight camping.

Visitors are reminded to make sure all food and items with odor (e.g., deodorant, water bottles) are safely secured. If a bear approaches a campsite or other developed area: make yourself look large, use voice and body posture to show dominance, throw objects near the bear, bang pots and yell. If a bear is seen outside of a developed area: calmly leave the area, walk away facing the bear, speak quietly and act passively.

Please report bear activity immediately to Park Headquarters at 715-779-3398, ext. 2.
