Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is actively recruiting local volunteers to join our trail crew, the Trail Titans. Volunteers will assist park staff with the maintenance and upkeep of the Inclines 6-10 Trail and Staple Bend Tunnel Trail. Interested individuals must apply for the position through our announcement on Volunteer.gov that can be accessed through our website. The 12-mile Inclines 6-10 Trail follows the inclines and levels of the Allegheny Portage Railroad along the eastern front of the Allegheny Mountains. The Staple Bend Tunnel trail follows the trace on Level No. 2 near Mineral Point.
The Trail Titans work to improve trail conditions and safety for park visitors, local hikers, and trail runners/bikers. The priorities for this this year are clearing woody vegetation and debris from areas along trails, clearing out ditches to keep runoff from rutting the trails, removing trash along trails and parking areas, maintaining the trail corridor by cutting vegetation during the growing season, installation of mile markers along the Inclines 6 to 10 Trail, and removal of invasive plants and shrubs.
There will be workdays planned throughout the year from March through November and will consist of both weekday and weekend opportunities. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least 4 workdays throughout the season. Tools and safety training for the workdays will be provided by park staff.
Announcements for additional positions will be forthcoming and posted to our website.
