Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail traverses various terrain along the coastal corridor on Hawai'i Island. Trails vary greatly within the 175 miles, passing through public and private land, from sandy beaches to inland lateral trails, and take a variety of forms from modern roads to lava foot paths.

Hawaiʻi Island National Parks:
The National Park Service has visitor facilities, restrooms, water, interpretive programs, wheelchair-friendly trails and experiences, braille brochures and ASL interpretation available at various sites within the four National Parks on island: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park and Puʻukoholā National Historic Site.

The Nā Ala Hele Ala Kahakai State Trail (Ala Kahakai Trail - Hawaiʻi Hiking Trail (hawaii.gov) is an open segment of trail in Kohala Hema (South Kohala). This trail varies greatly in form and accessibility. There are paved, wheelchair-friendly trail segments, ADA-compliant restrooms, picnic areas and parking at Spencer County Beach Park at ʻOhaiʻula. Other paved sections of trail include the grounds of the Mauna Kea Hotel at Kaunaʻoa Beach, ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay along the grounds of the Hilton Waikoloa, and at Mauna Lani Resort at Kalahuipuaʻa. Adjoining sections of this trail include rock and coral beaches, dirt and rock trails and sandy beaches. Elevation 0-30ft.

Ala Kahakai NHT also passes through a number of Hawaiʻi State Parks, and Hawaiʻi County Parks with various ADA compliant facilities, trails, and camping opportunities.
