About Red Power

2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the Occupation of Alcatraz by the Indians of All Tribes. Golden Gate National Recreation Area, in collaboration with Indians of All Tribes, planned 19 months of events and developed an exhibit.

Red Power on Alcatraz: Perspectives 50 Years Later told the story of the Occupation of Alcatraz, a watershed moment in the history of Alcatraz Island, Native American sovereignty, and our nation. This exhibit closed in 2025, but you can explore some of it's content below.

Virtual Exhibition

Visitors to the exhibit saw photographs by Brooks Townes, Ilka Hartmann and Stephen Shames, artwork by UrbanRezLife, original materials from the collection of Kent Blansett, and contributions from the community of former occupiers. View some rare photos featured in this exhibit at the galleries below:

Commemorative Events

During the Occupation, the Indians of All Tribes called for an Indian Cultural Center on Alcatraz Island. In keeping with this idea, cultural programs and activities took place from December 2019 - June 2021. Several of these were produced in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library and offered virtually. The recordings can be viewed below:
