About the NPS Maritime Heritage Program Vessel Pages

The purpose of these pages is to provide you with information about ships and their place in American history as well as their role in global society. In doing so, we hope to enhance your understanding of the important role that water-born transportation has played in the development, expansion, defense, and commercial endeavors of the United States and other nations.

Through these pages, we seek to provide you with examples of historic ship types as well as access to information about ship design and function. These pages are intended to serve as a basic reference tool, a starting point for learning about ships and appreciating the interpretive value they offer for understanding past and contemporary society.
