NPS

What is ANILCA?

2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). ANILCA created many of Alaska's National Parks, including Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, to protect natural and cultural landscapes. Answer the questions below to learn more about subsistence and how it relates to ANILCA as well as Alaska today.

  1. Go to the Yukon-Charley Subsistence page. In the first paragraph, what are some examples of a subsistence resources? Under the heading "Subsistence Legislation" what is described as being protected under ANILCA?
  2. Explore the story map on the NPS Alaska Subsistence page. After seeing these different examples of subsistence living in the story, describe what subsistence living might be like where you are from or in a natural place near you ( if you are from Alaska or practice subsistence where you live describe what you saw that you recognized)? What are some common values described in the story map that all subsistence users might share?
  3. Study the photograph below of Yukon-Charley. What resources in the picture could be considered subsistence resources? What is one way to make sure people can continue to live a subsistence lifestyle?

Thank you for visiting and taking time to think about subsistence in Alaska!
