Morning Rituals in Wawona

August 06, 2014 Posted by: SS - Park Ranger (Wawona)
There are a wide variety of options for spending a night in Wawona. Depending on your preference, there is historical lodging at the Wawona Hotel, camping in the campground, or renting a local cabin. Early mornings are an exceptional time of day in the south end of Yosemite National Park. As a visitor in Wawona, you may choose to experience some of these morning rituals.

Wawona Hotel - Chaise lounge chairs are artfully arranged around the swimming tank; the American flag is raised to the national anthem whistled by musically gifted staff; the smell of damp grass welcomes golfers as they head to their first tee; the aroma of coffee wafts through the front veranda as guests enjoy their morning java; and the Wawona shuttle is gearing up to transport eager visitors to see the giant sequoia trees.

Wawona Campground - Campers waken to the gurgling sounds of the South Fork of the Merced River; the heady scent of past evening fires drifts through campsites as people emerge from their cocoon of sleeping bags and tents to enjoy hearty breakfasts of pancakes, bacon, and cocoa; voices filled with anticipation can be heard planning hikes for the day as visitors pore over trail maps; and birders gather to walk near the river as the morning sunlight filters through the trees.

The Redwoods – Families renting cabins start their morning with a stroll to the Swinging Bridge area; create memories sharing breakfast out on their deck; put together picnic items for a feast with friends or relatives later in the day; lay out bathing suits and towels for a swim during the heat of the afternoon; make arrangements with the Wawona stables for a trail ride around the meadow loop; and download photos from their reunion to share.

One morning ritual that many people enjoy is opening the crisp sheets of a newspaper to hunt for the daily crossword puzzle. In fact, in some cases, the daily crossword puzzle is the only item that some enthusiasts search for. As a puzzle solver and constructor myself, I would like to share two crossword puzzles that I created to perhaps add to your morning ritual in Wawona. You will find that they are both appropriately themed to this wonderful place that we call Yosemite National Park. Enjoy a morning mental challenge before you head out on your day's adventure.
