Copper Center, Alaska- The Nugget Creek trail and visitor use cabin were reopened on August 13 after a 35 day closure due to public safety concerns. An incident involving a park visitor who reported being charged by a sow grizzly bear with two cubs at the cabin and park rangers discovering two moose kill sites, one on the trail, and one near the vicinity of the cabin, prompted the closure. The Nugget Creek cabin and trail is an area known for high bear activity.

Please remember to be "bear aware" when camping and hiking in Alaska's national parks. For more information on bear safety, please see the park's website at:  https://www.nps.gov/wrst/naturescience/upload/bearsafe.pdf

The Nugget Creek cabin is one of five public use cabins at Wrangell-St. Elias that accepts reservations. More information on the parks public use cabins can be found at: https://www.nps.gov/wrst/planyourvisit/backcountry-cabins.htm
