The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, partners and communities is our highest priority. Until April 24, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve did not have any COVID-19 measures in place for visitor services.
Join the Wrangell-St. Elias Planning Team in conversations about the Kennecott Operations Plan (2013) and the ongoing effort to update and revise this plan. Management of the Kennecott Mines NHL is a complicated and evolving task.

The plan is meant to give us clear guidance when addressing management issues and concerns. The meeting will include a short presentation in the beginning, then will be opened up for public comment and discussion. Specific topics for discussion are the proposed foot trail from McCarthy to Kennecott, parking within the NHL, the NPS presence at the end of the road, a Kennicott Glacier interpretation project, and updates regarding the hazardous substances and environmental investigations the NPS is pursuing within Kennecott. https://www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/news/kennecott-operations-plan-review-revision-public-meeting.htm

With the increase of precipitation received over the Chetaslina and Long fires in the past several days, fire activity continues to be minimal. Fire personnel will continue to monitor these fires and will conduct another reconnaissance flight in several days once the fuels have an opportunity to dry out. Fire activity on the monitored Chetaslina (#606) and Long (#484) fires remains minimal. https://www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/news/final-update-for-chetaslina-and-long-fires.htm

Chetaslina and Long Fire Update: Why Monitor Fires?

Ninety-one percent of Alaska parklands fall within Limited Fire Management Option areas. This is where fires may be actively monitored by fire managers for the benefit and long-term ecological health of the land. This means that fire managers continually monitor the fire and ensure no values are at risk while the fire creates the necessary mosaic pattern needed for our ecosystem’s vitality. Great information can be gained from monitoring the fires in the park and preserve. Specialists can better gauge the fire succession and change in landscape, gain increased fire behavior modeling, research the wildlife habitat impacts, and study the repercussions of shorter fire return intervals. https://www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/news/chetaslina-and-long-fire-update-why-monitor-fires.htm

Chetaslina and Long Fire Update: Rain and Cloud Cover Continue to Dampen Monitored Fires

The monitored fires in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve continue to burn in the duff soil layer of the forest floor. Duff is a soil type made of dead plant material including conifer needles,
moss, leaves, bark, twigs and tree litter. The Chetaslina Fire (#606) and Long Fire (#484) are burning two to three feet within the duff. According to the National Weather Service, cloudy, cool and wet conditions may persist through the weekend. The weather prompted a reduction from Alaska Preparedness Level 5 to Level 4 earlier in the week. While the weekend forecast may continue to limit fire activity, warm and dry weather could revive the lightning-caused
fires. https://www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/news/chetaslina-and-long-fire-update-rain-and-cloud-cover-continue-to-dampen-monitored-fires.htm

More rain is expected today as showers continue to move through the Copper River Basin area. An increase in rainfall expected for Friday. Recent precipitation across the south-central part of the state should moderate fire behavior. However, warmer and drier weather conditions forecast for next week will affect how much drying the fuels need until they become burnable again. The Chetaslina and Long fires are burning deep into the ground, two to three feet in some places. It will require significant amounts of moisture over a prolonged period of time followed by a blanket of snow to extinguish the fires. In other words, a season ending event. https://www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/news/another-day-of-showers-expected-warmer-drier-next-week.htm

Point protection operations on the Tenas Jack, Kuntson and Copper/Cheschina cabins and at Dadina Lake near the Chetaslina Fire (#606) are complete. Firefighters returned to the Valdez-Copper River Area Division of Forestry helibase after plumbing the structures, setting up the hose lays and sprinkler systems at each of the locations. They will be available for any initial attack requirements should the fire reach any of the management decision points that would require additional suppression efforts.
Forecast rain on Wednesday may offer a brief break in the hot, dry conditions for the Copper
River Basin. However, the temporary moderation in weather that may happen is likely not enough
to affect the deeper duff layers and elevated burning conditions may return in the coming days. https://www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/news/structures-protected-on-chetaslina-fire-rain-on-the-way.htm

This week plans for the 2019 federal subsistence hunt for the Chisana caribou herd were announced by Wrangell-St. Elias Superintendent Ben Bobowski, the designated federal manager for the hunt. The Federal Subsistence Board
authorized a limited harvest from the Chisana caribou herd at its January 2012 meeting. Consistent with the cooperative management plan for the herd, the harvest quota will be 7 bull caribou. The hunt will open on August 10 and close on September 30 or when the quota has been reached. Hunters are asked to report back within three days of harvesting an animal or at the end of the season if unsuccessful. The hunt area is Federal public lands in Unit 12 that lie east of the Nabesna River and Glacier and south of the Winter Trail running southeast from Pickerel Lake to the Canadian border. https://www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/news/plans-announced-for-2019-federal-subsistence-hunt-of-chisana-caribou-herd.htm

On July 17, 2019, a small lightning-caused wildfire was reported in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Named the Chetaslina Fire (#606) for its proximity to the Chetaslina River which originates from a glacier on the southwest flanks of Mount Wrangell. The fire is approximately 25 miles east of Copper Center. Fire behavior was reported as 80% active with running and torching. Smoke may be visible from the air and from the highway. The 5-acre fire is burning in a Limited Management Option area, where fire is allowed to perform its natural, ecological role in the boreal forest. Because it is in a Limited Management Option area, and no structures or other resources are currently threatened, the fire is in monitor status. NPS and the Valdez-Copper River Area Alaska Division of Forestry are managing the fire. https://www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/news/second-wildfire-detected-in-wrangell-st-elias-national-park-and-preserve.htm
