This project has been delayed. S.D. Highway 87 will close in early April.

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, S.D. – S.D. Highway 87 in Wind Cave National Park will close for upwards of five weeks beginning March 5, 2007 while contractors work on the Pig Tail Bridge. The road will be closed from the junction of U.S. Highway 385 and Highway 87 to the Rankin Ridge Fire Tower access road.

This 4.8 million dollar rehabilitation of Highway 87 will continue through next August. Resurfacing of Highway 87 and the north and south access roads into the visitor center will begin this spring under the direction of the project’s general contractor, the Hills Materials Company. The highway will not be closed during this time, but thirty-minute delays are possible.

“The Pigtail Bridge does not meet current load capacities and the guard rails do not meet existing crash-test requirements,” said Acting Superintendent Jim McMahill. “This closure will allow for the correction of those deficiencies which will permit the bridge to handle legal loads.”
