Millions of people travel to President's Park to see The White House every year. The two most popular spots to see The White House are in Lafayette Park and on the Ellipse. Please note that temporary area closures by the US Secret Service may occur without notice, which may affect your ability to access areas of the park.
NPS Lafayette Park: The North PorticoThe North Portico is the covered entrance to The White House. Constructed as the public entrance, this is where the president and first lady traditionally greet arriving guests. The view from Lafayette Park is the closest a pedestrian can get to The White House. It is the perfect place to observe the house, take a photo, and learn more about Lafayette Park's long history. Please note that Lafayette Park may be closed by US Secret Service without advance notice. NPS The Ellipse: South LawnThe Ellipse is located on the south side of The White House. From there, visitors can look across the South Lawn to see the Truman Balcony, the landing area for Marine One, and the gardens on the White House Grounds.
