Flagstaff, AZ – From Monday, May 2 to Tuesday, May 31, 2016, the Island Trail at Walnut Canyon National Monument will be closed. Maintenance crews will be completing work on the trail. This work is expected to take four weeks to complete. Closure to the entire Island Trail will be necessary as work will take place at the trailhead. This is the only access to the Island Trail.

The Island Trail is one of two trails open to the public. It is considered the main trail of the monument with over 75% of visitors using this trail to view the cliff dwellings and learn about the natural and cultural resources of the monument. With the main trail closed, entrance fees to the monument will be waived during this time. The visitor center will have Interagency Senior and Annual Passes available for those who wish to purchase them.

Although the Island Trail will be closed, the Rim Trail will remain open. Guided ranger-led programs to the historic Ranger Cabin will also take place during this time. Check the Walnut Canyon website at www.nps.gov/waca for a listing of programs.

Walnut Canyon NM is located 10 miles east of downtown Flagstaff via I-40 and can be reached at (928) 526-3367, on the web at www.nps.gov/waca or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/walnutcanyonnps. Walnut Canyon National Monument is open daily, except December 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
