VICKSBURG, Miss. – On March 3, 2025, the National Park Service (NPS) will begin repair work on Grant Circle and a section of Union Ave in the northern portion of the park. Following heavy rainfall in early 2020, these roads suffered catastrophic failures necessitating closure to ensure visitor safety. These roads have been closed since that time. Repairs are scheduled to be completed by November 2025. No additional road closures will be needed to complete these repairs. Construction areas will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the project.Work will include:

Install new stormwater control infrastructure and management features

Slope and Soil Stabilization:
  • Install reinforced soil slope walls and install gabion baskets
  • Install Rammed Aggregate Piers
  • Install Load Transfer Platform
  • Turf replacement/establishment
Roads
  • Roadway excavation and embankment construction
  • Remove and replace pavement on roads and Thayer’s Approach Bridge
  • Remove and replace curbs
  • New pavement striping
“This is significant milestone in addressing damage from the 2020 storms and restoring access to North Union Ave and Grant Circle” said Superintendent Carrie Mardorf.
