North Union Avenue Reopens- Repairs to Tour Road Complete

Vicksburg, MS: North Union Avenue has reopened to all visitor use, including vehicle and pedestrians following the completion of road repairs. The North Union Avenue repairs were the final phase of an emergency road repair project that began in January of 2019. All immediate repairs to the tour road are complete, and there are no detours or closures along the route.

“We appreciate the public’s patience with these necessary road repairs,” said Superintendent Bill Justice. “We are excited to be able to fully open the tour road once again, just in time for the beginning of the summer season.”

Confederate Avenue and North Union Avenue both received heavy damage from rainwater-caused erosion during heavy storm events in 2017, including impacts from Hurricane Harvey. Repairs were completed in partnership between the National Park Service and the Federal Highways Administration.

Additional erosion mitigation work on Confederate Avenue near the Louisiana Monument is nearly complete. Visitors using the tour road should pay attention to traffic control devices.
