Confederate Avenue between Fort Hill and Graveyard Road has reopened to all traffic following the completion of road repairs. Crews have now shifted their work to repairing the erosion damage on North Union Avenue near the Navy Monument. As a result, North Union Avenue is now temporarily closed from Grant Avenue to the USS Cairo Museum.
To facilitate a better visitor experience, Confederate Avenue from Fort Hill to Graveyard Road is temporarily opened to 2-way traffic. This will allow visitors to travel to-and-from the USS Cairo Museum on Confederate Avenue without the confusion of leaving the park. All vehicles need to obey posted speed limits. All visitors should stop by the visitor center to obtain a detour map.
When the repairs to North Union Avenue are complete and the road is reopened, Confederate Avenue will revert to one-way traffic.
Confederate Avenue and North Union Avenue sustained damage in 2017 and 2018 from soil erosion caused by Hurricane Harvey and local storm events. In January of 2019 the Federal Highways Administration began repairs to these damaged sections. Work is expected to be completed before April 2019.
