Valley Forge National Historical Park Impacted by Post-Tropical Cyclone Ida

King of Prussia, PENNSYLVANIA — Post-tropical cyclone Ida passed over Valley Forge National Historical Park the night of September 1, 2021, impacting park resources and operations. Torrential rains caused both the Schuykill River and Valley Creek to overflow their banks, which also affected several areas of the park.

Washington’s Headquarters is closed indefinitely due to flood damage to the basement and kitchen areas. The structure is sound overall and park staff are working to drain the water and make repairs to the building interior.

Several roadways and trails are also closed. [EDIT: All affected roadways are reopened. A 3/4-mile of the Valley Creek trail remains closed] State Road 252 within the park, Knox Covered Bridge, South Inner Line Drive, and Yellow Springs Road between Wilson Road and State Road 252 are closed. Park Staff are working with state and local officials to inspect these roadways and make repairs. The Valley Creek Trail, River Trail, and Betzwood Picnic Area and Trail Head are all closed due to high water and heavy damage. These road closures will delay the start of trolley tours in the park until September 11.

The park visitor center, restrooms and most park amenities are open, however telephone service to the park is down. If visiting the park, please do not attempt to cross any flooded areas on foot or in a vehicle. Please report any downed or damaged trees and power lines to park staff. Status updates will be posted to the park website, www.nps.gov/vafo, as areas are reopened.
