Fort Matanzas National Monument preserves the fortified coquina watchtower, completed in 1742, which defended the southern approach to the Spanish military settlement of St. Augustine. It also protects approximately 300 acres of Florida coastal environment containing dunes, marsh, maritime forest, and associated flora and fauna, including threatened and endangered species.

Built by the Spanish in St. Augustine to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument preserves the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States and interprets more than 450 years of cultural intersections.

How to Participate

Park rangers at Fort Matanzas National Monument are able to conduct live interactive classroom presentations through distance learning.This free program is a great way to introduce your students to this amazing national park. Email casa_education@nps.gov to schedule your class or learn more!

Objectives: 

Students will interview a park ranger about their park and career to gain insight into career opportunities. 

Program Length and Grade 

This 30-minute program is designed for students in middle school developing career awareness, but it can be adapted for any grade level. 

Before the Distance Learning Program 

  • Coordinate a date/time(s) for the program and share platform information with the park. 

  • Pre-Activity: Explore Fort MatanzasCastillo de San Marcos, and/or other park websites

  • Have your students physically or digitally prepare questions for the scheduled program. If they need some ideas, please use the student worksheet attached at the bottom of this webpage. 

During the Distance Learning Program

  • Materials needed: physical or digital space to record answers. 

  • The teacher is responsible for classroom management during the program. This includes calling on students throughout the program and helping to ensure that their answers and comments are understood by all.  

  • The park ranger will answer all of the student questions. 

After the Distance Learning Program 

  • E-mail us your questions or feedback!

  • Post Activity: Have students explore the Work for Us webpage. Ask them to write why they think they would enjoy and value working for the National Park Service or why they think they would prefer another career. 

  • Discover more education resources for your classroom.

  • Explore fun online activities for kids to experience with their families.
