Stones River National Cemetery is undertaking a significant restoration project to raise, straighten, align, and clean about 2,770 of its more than 7,000 historic, marble headstones. This effort is part of the National Cemetery Investment Initiative, a multi-year program to preserve and protect the 14 national cemeteries managed by the National Park Service (NPS).
Stones River National Cemetery, established in 1864 as a solemn memorial to those who served our nation, honors more than 6,100 soldiers, most of whom fought in the Civil War, including 2,562 unknown soldiers and nearly 1,000 veterans from conflicts through the Vietnam era.
Over time, many headstones have gradually shifted, causing misalignment. This shift affects the dignity and uniformity of the cemetery’s historic cultural landscape, which is vital to preserving its commemorative atmosphere. A restoration contract has been awarded to a local veteran-owned company, underscoring the project’s commitment to honoring those who served.
Stones River National Cemetery works closely with many valued partners including the Friends of Stones River National Battlefield, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Amazon, Civil Air Patrol, Blackman High School JROTC, and other community groups. These partnerships strengthen the cemetery’s mission of honor, remembrance, and stewardship.
Once this comprehensive restoration is complete, park staff will be better able to maintain the headstones in good condition by addressing issues as they arise, ensuring the cemetery remains a place of honor and reflection for generations to come.
The National Cemetery Investment Initiative supports projects like this by investing in repair and rehabilitation of facilities and grounds, as well as in training, personnel recruitment, youth partnerships, and specialized equipment acquisition.
The NPS encourages community involvement and welcomes volunteer groups interested in adopting a section of graves to help care for these hallowed grounds. More information on volunteering can be found at https://www.volunteer.gov/s/volunteer-opportunity/a09SJ000002J4A1/adoptasection.
