SHILOH, Tennessee – On Saturday, May 25, Shiloh National Military Park will present its first Concert-in-the-Park of 2019 in commemoration of Memorial Day weekend. The free twilight concert on the lawn in front of the park Visitor Center will feature Jazz Music and a local favorite. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets to the concert.

“Over the last four years we have presented concerts in the park at Shiloh, and we are pleased to be able to continue the events in 2019,” said Superintendent Dale Wilkerson. “We invite everyone to come out, enjoy the park, and listen to some outstanding performances by these wonderful musicians.”

From 5:30 – 6:15 pm, McNairy County native and singer/songwriter Sandy Carroll will perform tunes from her long career of recordings dating back to the mid-1980s. In 1984, she wrote and recorded the song “Memphis in May,” which became the unofficial theme for the annual Memphis in May event, and in 1989 the legendary bluesman Albert King recorded her song “If You Got It” for his final album. Since then, Carroll has released seven solo CDs, several singles, been part of a half-dozen Memphis music compilation CDs, and has a song on a Grammy nominated album.

Carroll’s 2013 CD, “Unnaturally Blonde,” received international acclaim and substantial radio play on Americana radio stations. Her latest CD entitled ‘The Last Southern Belle,” hit #1 on the Roots charts for Contemporary Country Song for six weeks, and also hit #1 on the Hot Indie charts 100 charts. In 2015, Carroll was named a “Memphis Music Emissary” in recognition of her contributions to Memphis music.

From 6:30 – 7:15 pm, the renowned 41st Army Jazz Band, of the Mississippi Army National Guard, will perform. The 41st Army Band based out of Jackson, Mississippi, is made up of more than three dozen soldiers from six states. The band has been around for 50 years providing entertainment for military and civilians alike, both in the United States and internationally. The 41st Army Band is the musical ambassador for the MS Army National Guard and performs at a variety of venues including official ceremonies, festivals, recruiting tours, and community relations events.

“We are very excited that the 41st Army Band was available to join us this Memorial Day weekend. Military bands in the United States date back to 1798 when Congress authorized a Marine band, and by the Battle of Shiloh nearly every Union regiment had a regimental band, some of whom played while this battle was being fought,” said Wilkerson.

The park will have a Junior Ranger booth set up for the kids on Saturday, May 25 starting at noon. Children of all ages are invited to work on three different Junior Ranger booklets in order to earn three different Junior Ranger badges. Temporary arrowhead tattoos and coloring sheets will be available as well as a dress like a Civil War soldier picture booth. This year we also have activities related to Shiloh veteran John Wesley Powell. Powell, who lost his right arm at Shiloh, explored and mapped the Colorado River and Grand Canyon after the war. This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of his expedition.

On May 25 & 26 the park will offer cannon firing demonstrations across the street from the Visitor Center. The Shiloh cannon crew, wearing period uniforms, will demonstrate the duties of Civil War cannoneers, the implements and projectiles they used, and the proper loading and firing procedures of the 6-pounder field piece. The artillery firing demonstrations will take place at 10:00 am, 11:30pm, 1:00pm, and 2:30pm on Saturday, and 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 2:30pm on Sunday.

On Saturday, May 25, the park is also hosting a “Battle of Shiloh Descendant’s Reunion.” All descendants of veterans of the Battle of Shiloh are invited from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm to bring any documents, photographs, and items related to their ancestor so the park can scan or photograph them for future Civil War researchers. A descendants’ registry will be available for all to sign and staff will be on hand to mark where their ancestors fought on the battlefield. Descendants are encouraged to trade stories with each other and park staff about their veteran of the Battle of Shiloh.
