San Juan- The San Juan National Historic Site (SAJUNHS) informs the public that the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro will be partially closed to the public for the duration of the San Sebastian Festival from January 17, 2018 to January 21, 2018, from 7:00 pm to 5:00 am. In addition, the park will be closing the tour buses parking lot in the Castillo San Cristobal Visitor Center during the festival. These measures help ensure the effective protection of the fortifications and keep our visitors and staff safe.
Unfortunately, each year during the festival, the park experiences an increase in acts of vandalism that range from graffiti in the historic walls to actual destruction of park property. The amount of people visiting Old San Juan also creates a problem with trash disposition. “This partial closure will help protect historical and cultural resources as well as the lives of the thousands of visitors who will be at San Juan for the festival. Even with the cooperation of the Municipality of San Juan and the Commonwealth, the impacts to our resources are significant”, said Acting Deputy Superintendent Mark Musitano.
“After Hurricane Maria we have seen an increase in graffiti and other types of vandalism on historic property. Besides protecting our historic resources, we also need to protect festival participants and ensure that our operations run with minimal interruptions. The Tourism Company has advised that about 120,000 visitors will be in San Juan during the festival and we want to ensure that they are able to enjoy this World Heritage Site”, concluded Musitano.
The fortifications of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal will remain open during regular hours of operation 9:00 am-6:00 pm. All visitors to the fortifications and participants to the festival are welcome to come and enjoy while visiting the park and help us protect the fortifications by depositing trash in the appropriate containers and remain safe by not climbing on the walls.

San Juan National Historic Site (San Juan NHS) is comprised of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, Fort San Juan de La Cruz (El Cañuelo), la Puerta de San Juan and most of the city wall. The park is open every day from 9:00a.m to 6:00p.m, except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Year’s. The entrance to San Juan National Historic Site is $7 for adults16 and older and free of charge for children 15 and under accompanied by an adult.

EL SAN JUAN NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE ANUNCIA EL CIERRE PARCIAL DE LOS TERRENOS DEL MORRO DURANTE EL FESTIVAL DE SAN SEBASTIAN
San Juan- El San Juan National Historic Site (SAJUNHS) informa al público que los terrenos del Castillo San Felipe del Morro se cerrarán parcialmente al público durante la duración del Festival de San Sebastián a partir del 17 de enero de 2018 al 21de enero de 2018 de 7:00 p.m. a 5:00 a.m. Además, durante el festival, el parque cerrará el estacionamiento para las guaguas de operadores turísticos, en el Centro de Visitantes del Castillo San Cristóbal. Estas medidas ayudan a garantizar la protección efectiva de las fortificaciones y mantener a nuestros visitantes y personal seguros.
Desafortunadamente, cada año durante el festival, el parque experimenta un aumento en los actos de vandalismo, que van desde el graffiti en las paredes históricas hasta la destrucción de la propiedad del parque. La cantidad de personas que visitan el Viejo San Juan también crea un problema con la disposición de basura. “Este cierre parcial ayudará a proteger los recursos históricos y culturales, así como las vidas de los miles de visitantes que estarán en San Juan para el festival. Aun con la colaboración del Municipio de San Juan y del Estado Libre Asociado de P.R., los impactos a nuestros recursos son significativos”, dijo el Superintendente Interino Mark Musitano.
“Después del huracán María hemos visto un aumento en el graffiti y otros tipos de vandalismo en la propiedad histórica. Además de proteger nuestros recursos históricos, también tenemos que proteger los participantes del festival y asegurar que nuestras operaciones se realizan con un mínimo de interrupciones. La Compañía de Turismo ha informado de que alrededor de 120,000 visitantes estarán en San Juan durante el festival y queremos asegurarnos de que son capaces de disfrutar de este patrimonio de la humanidad”, concluyó Musitano.
Las fortificaciones del Castillo San Felipe del Morro y el Castillo San Cristóbal permanecerán abiertas durante el horario normal de operaciones de 9:00 am a 6:00 pm. Todos los visitantes de las fortificaciones y los participantes en el festival son bienvenidos a venir y disfrutar durante su visita al parque y nos ayude a proteger las fortificaciones depositando la basura en los zafacones de basura y se mantengan seguros al no escalar las murallas.

El San Juan National Historic Site está compuesto por el Castillo San Felipe del Morro, el Castillo San Cristóbal, el Fuerte de San Juan de La Cruz (El Cañuelo), Puerta de San Juan, y la mayor parte de la muralla de la ciudad. El parque está abierto todos los días de 9:00 am a 6:00 pm, excepto en Acción de Gracias, Navidad y Año Nuevo. La entrada a San Juan NHS y sus fortificaciones es de $7 para los visitantes 16 años o mayores y libre de costo para los menores de 15 años acompañados por un adulto.
