San Juan, PR –Superintendent Walter J. Chavez announces a proposed fee change for San Juan National Historic Site (SAJUNHS). The fee change is planned to go into effect on October, 2017.The Site will complete the required civic engagement process to conduct several public meetings, issuing news releases and informing media, stakeholders and partners of the proposed change. The new proposed fee will be $7.00 to enter the fortifications of San Juan National Historic Site. The $5.00 fee had been in place since 2014 as a partial increment to our assigned fee of $7.00 by nationwide mandate on August 2014.Changes would begin in October, 2017 to align with the new National Park standard entrance-fee schedule.
"Our entrance fee has been inconsistent in comparison with other similar National Parks and Historic Sites. The $7.00 fee per adult will give access to all areas of San Juan National Historic Site including Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal."The new $7.00 fee will go into effect and will be good for 24 hours, and children 15 and under continue to be free of charge", said Superintendent Chavez.
80 percent of the funds collected from the entrance fee remains at San Juan National Historic Site. These funds are used to provide additional resources to address the backlog of maintenance, preservation and to enhance visitor services.Projects recently completed or soon to be completed which were financed by the existing fee include:
·Creation of additional jobs in VisitorService and Protection
·Acquisition of new park film
·Purchase of cannons
·Additions to the Paseo del Morro and restoring garitas
·Every Kid in a Park program
"This funding will help to complete additions of phases to the Paseo del Morro, transport 4th graders to the park and will also generate over 25 additional jobs in the near future", added Superintendent Chavez.
We invite the public to attend Public Meetings that will be conducted on October 4th and 5th, 2016 at Castillo San Cristobal Visitor Center at 5:30 pm. A 30-day public engagement period on the proposed fee increase begins today, Tuesday, October 4 to November 2, 2016.
