San Juan, Puerto Rico- San Juan National Historic Site will once again host the "Pet Fest at El Morro" this Sunday, March 6, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. "Once again we will host our Annual Pet Festival at Castillo San Felipe del Morro. This will be our fifth year hosting the Festival, which began as a way to encourage visitors to pick up after their pets and help keep the site and our community clean while enjoying the park with their pets. I encourage all visitors whether attending the festival only or whether you use the park on a regular basis, to help keep our community and your National Park clean. Old San Juan and the fortifications of San Juan National Historic Site are worthy and deserving of their National Historic Landmark, National Park and World Heritage Site status and must be maintained in pristine fashion for all to enjoy." said Superintendent Walter J. Chavez.

Once again this year San Juan National Historic Site is pleased to be teaming up with Pet ID, Gravy Train, Primera Hora, and others to conduct this event for families and their pets. A Park Ranger will provide an educational talk to promote San Juan National Historic Site as a pet friendly environment as well as the problems associated with pet waste, the abandonment of animals in the park and community, especially on the Paseo del Morro (also part of SAJUNHS). This year's activities include dog club presentations, yoga and massage for pets and their owners, a dog park, agility exhibits, an adoption center, entertainment for children, food gathering for pet shelters, and much, much more.

With use of the area, comes responsibility;owners need to be responsible and clean up after their pets and keep them on a leash at all times for all visitors to enjoy the park. "Help keep your park and Old San Juan clean and work with us to deal with the abandonment and feeding of animals in our community" added Superintendent Chavez. As we do each year we ask participants to be responsible and pick up after your pets as they enter and leave Old San Juan and the park. Water stations will be provided on the esplanade of El Morro and bags for pet waste will be provided to festival participants.

The participation in this event is free;however, visitors wishing to enter and visit the fortifications are required to pay the usual fee. Pet owners should be aware that only service animals are allowed inside the fortifications. All pets must wear their collar and leash at all times while they are on the grounds of San Juan National Historic Site.
