Walter J. Chavez, Superintendent of San Juan National Historic Site announced the Schedule of Events for National Park Week, April 22nd to the 28th. The week’s celebrations will start with a Ground Breaking Ceremony at the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro on the morning of Sunday, April 22 at 9:30am. Speakers at this event will include NPS Southeast Regional Director, Patricia A. Hooks and Honorable Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, Governor or Puerto Rico.
Schedule of Events Monday-10:30 and 2:30 Peek into the Treasure Chest-Enter the NPS Archives in Castillo San Cristóbal for an unforgettable trip to our rich historic past and to admire irreplaceable artifacts in this priceless collection.
Tuesday-10:30 and 11:30 at San Cristóbal and 2:30 and 3:30 at San Felipe del Morro Behind the Scenes Tour-Meet a ranger at the forts’ main plazas for a rare tour of park areas regularly off limits to the general public.
Wednesday-9:30 and 1:30 Preservation Presentation-Meet the ranger in the El Morro main plaza and walk to our unique preservation lab to learn how we care for these centenary structures.
Thursday-10:30 and 11:30 at Castillo San Cristóbal and 2:30 and 3:30 at Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Historic Drawings vs. Graffiti-Meet ranger at the fort plazas to participate in a discussion and presentation on the hundreds of historic drawings and graffiti found in the park
Friday-9:00am, 10:30am and 1:30pm Jr. Ranger Program Inauguration-Every child is a ranger! Bring your children to Castillo San Cristóbal and learn together while enjoying these 45 minutes long group activities and short walks.
Saturday-9:00am to 12noon Paseo del Morro Restoration-Come help park staff clean up and preserve this trendy national trail starting at the San Juan Gate. Free entrance to the forts for participants.
All events are presented in Spanish and English and are open to the general public. Events with a limit of participants will fill up on a first come-first served basis. For more information about these fun filled celebration week please call 787-729-6777. |
