San Juan National Historic Site will be offering free entrance to the fortifications of Castillo San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro during National Get Outdoors Day, Saturday, June 9, 2012.National Get Outdoors Day, now in its fifth year, encourages Americans, especially youth, to participate in outdoor activities while enjoying the beauty of public lands such as national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges. The free entrance day creates an opportunity for families and communities to get outside, be active and have fun.

"I encourage people to get out and enjoy National Get Outdoors Day while learning more about the history of Castillo San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro.Please come and participate in one of the scheduled interpretative programs, explore the fortifications or just come fly your kite at El Morro," said Superintendent Walter J. Chavez.Also, "local Artisans Mr. Fernando Rojas and Mr. Heraclio Cruz will be providing demonstrations and selling their crafts this weekend at Castillo San Felipe del Morro in anticipation of this year's Annual Artisan Fair," added Superintendent Chavez.

All are invited to enjoy the fortifications and the Park Ranger talk on the El Morro Lighthouse Morro (45 min- 1 hr) on Saturdays at 10:30 am (Spanish) and 2:30pm (English), as well as on Sundays at 10:30 (English) and 2:30pm (Spanish).Outer Defenses Walks are offered at Castillo San Cristobal on Saturdays at 2:30pm (Spanish) and on Sundays at 2:30pm (English).Also at San Cristobal, Tunnel Tours on Saturdays at 10:30 am (English) and on Sunday at 10:30 am (Spanish.)

San Juan National Historic Site is comprised of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, Fort San Juan de La Cruz (El Cañuelo), the San Juan Gate, and most of the City Wall.The fortifications are open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's day.In addition, San Cristobal is open to 7:00 pm on Tuesdays when the Lelolai Folkloric dance presentationis held in the main plaza from 6:00 to 6:45pm.Entrance to San Juan NHS is $3.00 per fortification or 5.00 for both; free for those with ages 15 and under are free.
