San Juan, Puerto Rico – San Juan National Historic Site announces that during Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián celebration, areas of the park including the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro will be closed to the public for a period of time. This closure will be effective each day from January 19th - 23rd, from 7:00 pm to 5:00 am and federal law (36 CFR 1.5) will be strictly enforced.
“In order for the National Park Service to effectively protect the fortifications and keep our visitors safe, it is necessary to close the grounds of El Morro at night time for the duration of the festival” said Acting Superintendent Felix J. López. Unfortunately, during the festival each year, the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the walls on the north side along Calle Norzagaray facing our neighbor community of La Perla and other areas in the park become swamped with large amounts of trash and debris left by festival participants. During these days we deploy all of our limited resources to protect the fortifications. Besides protecting the resource from graffiti and other hazards we also need to protect festival participants who climb the historic walls putting their lives and our staff lives at risk.
“We will continue to be vigilant in protecting the resource and the visitors, and in this case, limiting access to some areas for periods of time have been our most effective option” added López. The fortifications of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal will remain open during regular hours of operation 9:00 am-6:00 pm. All visitors to the fortifications and participants to the festival are asked to help protect the fortifications by depositing trash in the appropriate containers and remain safe by not climbing on the walls. “With everyone’s help, we can continue to effectively maintain and preserve this National Park and World Heritage Site for all to enjoy” concluded Superintendent López.
