Poison Ivy occurs near trail edges and in unmowed fields around Sagamore Hill.

NPS

Poison Ivy

  • Poison ivy is prevalent in fields and wooded areas of the park
  • Stay on paths and trails to avoid contact
  • Learn to identify the plant and do not touch – leaves of three, let it be
  • All parts of the plant can produce a skin irritant in all seasons
Poison Ivy is not an invasive exotic plant, but rather a native component of the plant community in the northeast region. Berries from the plant are a highly nutritious food for birds and animals. The vine provides cover and protects the soil from erosion.

Summer Heat

  • There is no air conditioning in the Roosevelt Home
  • Stay hydrated throughout your visit
  • The Old Orchard Museum & Visitor Center is air conditioned
  • Take breaks in the shade when hiking to the beach
  • Sensitive groups should consider visiting in the spring or fall

Pet Safety

  • Visitors who bring pets for a walk at Sagamore Hill should review our Pets page
  • Dogs must remain on a six foot leash at all times
  • Dogs may not enter the water at the beach

In an emergency, dial 911.
