On February 4, 2020 Sagamore Hill National Historic Site held a full day teacher workshop on Theodore Roosevelt and Women’s Suffrage in honor of the centennial of the 19th Amendment, which allowed women the right to vote. The workshop featured two speakers, a house tour for attendees, a lesson planning session, and lunch, which was provided by The Friends of Sagamore Hill. The first speaker was Natalie Naylor, professor emerita at Hofstra University who spoke on the history of women’s suffrage, Theodore Roosevelt’s limited role in the movement, and the prominent Long Island women that participated. The second speaker was Brooke Kroeger, a journalist, professor, and author who discussed how women worked with men to get the vote, highlighting the contributions of the other gender in the fight for suffrage.
The lesson-planning session involved a collaboration between teachers of different school districts who used primary sources to create lesson plans on Women’s Suffrage for their students. The teachers gained seven hours of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credit that they could then put towards professional development within their schools.
The workshop was a successful way to promote on Women’s Suffrage Centennial in local classrooms. The informative lectures given by the speakers and the ideas brought forward as a result of the lesson planning workshop provided alternative ways of viewing and teaching these important historical events during the centennial.
