Call for Volunteers to Assist with Beach Clean-up

 

Sagamore Hill NHS will offer a host of activities on Saturday, September 26 beginning with a Volunteer Beach Clean-Up from 8:30AM to 12:00PM. The beach clean-up is part of the International Coastal Sweep event in Oyster Bay organized by the Friends of the bay, Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary. Meet at the Visitor Center and wear appropriate shoes and old clothes. Following the work period, refreshments and snacks will be provided behind the Visitor Center. Participating Boy &Girl Scout groups will receive Certificates of Participation. No reservations are required.

 

Fee Free on Public Lands Day!!!!

 

There is no charge to visit Sagamore Hill NHS on September 26, 2009. Visitors will still need to obtain tickets to tour the home of the 26th president, which they should do upon arrival at the Visitor Center, located adjacent to the parking lot. Tours are offered on the hour, and on a first-come-first-served basis. Tours are limited to fourteen persons and it is very likely that all the tours will be filled before the last tour at 4:00pm actually occurs. Visitors are encouraged to come early in the day to reserve a tour time. 

 

Americas Best Idea Preview at 6:30PM

 

Sagamore Hill NHS will screen a 45 minute preview DVD which highlights segments of Ken Burns’ new documentary film: The National Parks: Americas Best Idea. The new Burns film has been an almost ten year project in the making, and chronicles the founding of the National Park Service in 1916 to present. The six part series is set to premiere on PBS Sunday, September 27, 2009. Check your local PBS station for more details. The screening will take place in our program tent behind the Visitor Center beginning at 6:30PM. Complimentary drinks and snacks will be provided for attendees along with an appearance from Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed by James Foote. The visitor center and gift shop will be open during the event. This is a rain or shine event. 

 

 

 

Junior Ranger Activities

 

In addition, there are several free Junior Ranger activities for children that teach them about the Sagamore Hill’s history and natural environment. Completion of the activities earns them a certificate and their very own Junior Park Ranger badge! Activity booklets and information are available at the Visitor Center and Old Orchard building.
