PHILADELPHIA - National Park Service (NPS) Regional Director Gay Vietzke has named Jonathan Parker as the new permanent superintendent of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Oyster Bay, New York. Parker will begin his new assignment on August 30, 2020.
“Sagamore Hill National Historic Site will greatly benefit from Jonathan’s leadership style and knowledge of the site,” shared Vietzke. “While serving as acting superintendent at the park earlier this year, Jonathan successfully steered Sagamore Hill operations during the COVID-19 pandemic at a park near the epicenter of the outbreak. He is dedicated to improving the quality of visitor access and experiences within the park while also addressing the preservation of this exceptional presidential home.”
“I am honored to have been selected to serve as the superintendent of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site,” said Parker. “It is a privilege to support the ongoing mission of this place that is singular in American history. Not only is Sagamore Hill an iconic home to a renowned American President and his family, it is a serene, beautiful and living emblem of Theodore Roosevelt’s regard for the conservation of the American landscape. I am equally honored to work alongside the outstanding staff and partners of Sagamore Hill, whose diligent efforts ensure that its mission is preserved and continues.”
Parker currently serves as the chief of interpretation at Valley Forge National Historical Park in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. He previously served as the chief of interpretation, education and partnerships at Salem Maritime and Saugus Iron Works National Historic Sites in Massachusetts. Recently, Parker led the collaborative development of a combined $2.5 million federal project for Valley Forge that included the design of 3,600 square feet of new interpretive exhibits and the production of five new interpretive films.
Parker began his career in the National Park Service as a volunteer at Valley Forge National Historical Park and has worked as a Division Chief, Park Ranger, Volunteer Coordinator, and Dispatcher at seven national park units including Rainbow Bridge National Monument in Utah, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona as well as Lowell National Historical Park in Massachusetts.
Parker is originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Education from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He is an Eagle Scout and enjoys sailing, hiking and photography.
