On Wednesday, October 27, 2010, local naval personnel and the crew from the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier visited Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (NHS) for a special guided tour of the Theodore Roosevelt home. The tour was provided by seasonal Park Guide Jean Quinn, who was a Petty Officer 3rd Class in the US Navy. Ms. Quinn joked that she was excited for the opportunity to give orders to Lieutenant Commander Michael Van Horn, such as, no photography and not to touch any artifacts in the home because of historic preservation concerns. LTC Michael Van Horn of the Naval Operational Support Center in Amityville, NY graciously followed Ms. Quinn's "orders." Besides her dedication to Sagamore Hill NHS, Ms. Quinn is also dedicated to American Legion Post 175 in Syosset, NY. She was the past Commander of American Legion Post 175 and is currently the Post Chaplin. Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed by James Foote also made an appearance during Ms. Quinn's tour, and delighted casual visitors and a school group by speaking with them in the home. Preceding the tour, the USS Theodore Roosevelt participated in the unveiling of a new wayfinding panel for Sagamore Hill NHS located in the parking area in front of the Visitor Center. The new panel will show visitors how the Roosevelt estate appeared in 1918 and will orient them to the key features of the landscape today. The new panel was unveiled in recognition of what would have been Theodore Roosevelt's 152nd birthday. Afterward a reception with complimentary food and refreshments was provided by Friends of Sagamore Hill. |
