Field Trip - Saguaro By the Numbers

Program Content

Contrary to popular belief, math is actually really fun and useful! In fact, whether they know it or not, every visitor to Saguaro National Park uses a bit of mental math to wrap their heads around questions like "How tall...?" or "How hot...?" or "How much longer...?" Students will explore:

  • The dimensions of the giant saguaro cactus and how they are used to determine the age of the cactus forest.
  • The measurement and noticing of tiny things often overlooked -- like grains of sand and microscopic organisms.
  • Topographic maps and compass bearings to aid in navigation through the desert.
  • Calculating the slope of a trail using elevation measurements over distance.

AZ Standards: COMING SOON!
