Frequently Asked QuestionsIt is the policy of the National Park Service that its museum collections and archival resources be available for educational and scholarly purposes. The Service is also charged with managing these resources for optimumpreservation. To minimize impact on these collections it is necessary to regulate access to the materials. A museum collection is a group of artifacts (including archives) and/or scientific specimens that are relevant to the park’s mission, mandates, history, and themes, and which the park manages, preserves, and makes available for access (through research, exhibits, and other media) for the public benefit. Please see NPS Museum Handbook Chapter 1 to better understand what a museum/archive is and how NPS Collections are used. Cultural Resource Collection: This includes archives, historical objects, and archaeological artifacts. Most of the park's archives are stored at the Western Archaeology and Conservation Center (WACC) in Tucson, Arizona, as well as at the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (SAAN) facilities. These archives encompass a wide range of materials, including photographs, oral histories, maps, digital media, paintings, and SAAN records. The archaeological collection constitutes the majority of the cultural resources and is housed at the University of Texas at San Antonio Center for Archaeological Research (UTSA-CAR). Historical objects are also part of the collection and are stored at SAAN facilities. See Library & Resources section on this page to explore the various repositories that hold materials relating to the San Antonio Missions.
