Carry-out from Black Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park

Today, near Black Lake (10,620 feet) in Rocky Mountain National Park, a 47 year old female, (hometown unknown at this time) suffered a broken ankle. Park dispatch was contacted by cell phone at 2:30 p.m. Black Lake is 5.4 miles from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. The first ranger arrived on scene at 4:35 p.m. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. two rangers alternated carrying the woman on their backs for approximately two hours. Other rescuers brought in a wheeled litter and at 7:15 p.m. the woman was transferred to the litter. There are twenty-three people in the field, mainly park service staff assisted by Larimer County Search and Rescue. It is estimated the litter team with the patient will reach the trailhead at around midnight.
