WASHINGTON — The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Brian Joyner as the new superintendent of Rock Creek Park. He previously served as the park’s deputy superintendent.

“Brian excels at engaging local communities and managing complex projects,” acting Regional Director Lisa Mendelson said. “With over 20 years of National Park Service experience, he is a champion for connecting people to the diverse and underrepresented stories inherent in national parks. All this, and Brian’s passion for public history and conservation makes him well-suited to lead Rock Creek Park.”

“As a DC native, I am honored to be selected as the superintendent of a park that I’ve known and enjoyed my entire life,” Joyner said. “Rock Creek Park’s forests, its recreational opportunities and its history are important to so many people in Washington and in the area. I look forward to continuing to work alongside the park’s talented staff to care for this urban oasis.”

Joyner began his NPS career as a writer/editor at NPS headquarters, where he wrote publications about the contributions and importance of minority groups to American heritage, edited cultural resource journals and communicated about the National Historic Landmarks Survey program. He served as a senior analyst to the NPS Deputy Director. Joyner was selected to serve as an NPS Bevinetto Fellow, a competitive 2-year legislative affairs assignment during which he served as staff to the House Natural Resources Committee and then served as Chief of Staff at National Mall and Memorial Parks. He joined the staff at Rock Creek Park as deputy superintendent in 2022.

Joyner lives in Washington, DC, with his wife and two children. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Maryland and studied historic preservation and American studies at George Washington University.
