Extreme Fire Danger Today (Monday, June 11, 2012) Affects National Parks in Marin

Weather conditions have prompted National Park Service officials to declare extreme fire danger for Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) sites in Marin County for today, Monday, June 11, 2012.

Public restrictions in effect today within Point Reyes National Seashore boundaries are:

1. all wood or charcoal fires will be banned including grills, although self-contained gas stoves will be permitted at designated campgrounds and picnic areas;
2. all previously issued fire permits will become null and void;
3. Mt. Vision Road will be closed to all vehicle traffic;
4. smoking will be prohibited on all park trails and backcountry areas.

Public restrictions that will be in effect today at GGNRA sites in Marin County, including the Marin Headlands and Muir Woods National Monument are:

1. all fires, including campfires at Kirby Cove, beach fires at Muir beach, cooking fires and charcoal grills, are prohibited except for self-contained, portable gas stoves, which are allowed only in designated campgrounds and picnic areas;
2. smoking is prohibited on all park trails and in all areas of Muir Woods National Monument.

Roger Wong, Fire Management Officer for the SF Bay Area National Parks said, "When fire danger is elevated, we must take extra steps to prevent a wildfire."
