On Saturday, June 16, 2007, Vincent Au, 28, of Sunnyvale CA, was swimming with friends in Bass Lake when he disappeared. Bass Lake, located in the southern part of the Point Reyes National Seashore, is a small lake and a very popular swimming hole. National Park Rangers were notified and immediately responded to search the area. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office Dive team was notified and responded to the lake. Despite significant search efforts, Au’s body was not recovered until Friday, June 22, when it resurfaced and was recovered.
“The lake has many submerged trees which complicated the diving efforts,” stated Colin Smith, Chief Ranger at Point Reyes National Seashore. Au’s body was removed by rangers and turned over to the Marin County Coroner’s Office. Point Reyes Park Rangers Bruce Dombrowski and Dan Habig were the incident commanders for the operation which was a cooperative investigation between Point Reyes National Seashore and the Marin County Coroner’s Office.
