Special events focusing on the importance of defensible space will take place throughout California during Wildfire Awareness Week, May 6-12. Defensible space is the space between a structure and the surrounding vegetation which makes it possible for firefighters to safely defend a structure during a wildfire. It may also allow a structure to survive on its own. Defensible space on a landscape scale involves managing vegetation to create places in wildlands where a wildfire is easier to control. Wildfire Awareness programs at Point Reyes National Seashore will take place on May 5 and May 19, from 10:00 am to 12:00. Each will begin with a 30 minute presentation at the BearValleyVisitorCenter, followed by a short field trip. Participants will learn about the park's fire management plan and how to create defensible space at home. Saturday, May 5, 10:00-12:00- Point Reyes Fire Management -- Tree Thinning Projects This program will emphasize fuel reduction in eucalyptus groves, and will provide an overview of a thinning project near the Palomarin Trailhead which will begin later this spring. We will visit a eucalyptus grove near the visitor center where work has been done in previous years. Saturday, May 19, 10:00-12:00 – Point Reyes Fire Management -- Prescribed Fire Projects This program will emphasize the use of prescribed fire to create fuel breaks in the OlemaValley and along Limantour Road. We will visit parts of the Limantour fuel break and compare areas of coyote brush that have been burned with areas that have not been burned. -NPS- |
