Horse Trail at Point Reyes National Seashore will be closed to the public starting Monday, October 4, 2004 until approximately July 2005. This trail closure is necessary to make extensive repairs to this heavily used and popular trail at Point Reyes. Point Reyes National Seashore is visited by 2.5 million visitors annually, and many of these visitors hike or ride horses along many of the 147 miles of trails. The 1.7 mile-long Horse Trail connects the park headquarters area and goes up towards Mount Wittenberg to the Sky Trail junction. The repair work includes repairing severe erosion and removing sections of the old roadbed for approximately month or until the rainy season stops the work. The Park’s Trail Crew has constructed reroutes at a grade of 10% or less. Prior to this, the trail grade in many locations exceeded 20%. The importance of reducing the grade was done to reduce the amount of severe erosion and long-term maintenance to the trail. Water quality degradation can also occur with excessive runoff. The trail will be closed until next summer to let vegetation stabilize and soils compact to ensure any resource impacts are minimal. -NPS- |
