Two prescribed fires are tentatively scheduled for Monday, July 7 and will begin at approximately 8:00 am. The first fire will be on a two-acre site located approximately 1 mile south of the Fivebrooks Trailhead on Hwy 1. Temporary traffic delays may occur between 8:00 am and noon on that stretch of Hwy 1.

The second prescribed fire will be located at Divide Meadow along the Bear Valley Trail. This ½ acre fire is tentatively scheduled to begin at approximately 1:00 pm.

The burn is part of an ongoing effort to remove the invasive, non-native plant, scotch broom. Burning is one proven effective method in removing the plant from an area where it has grown in very dense patches. Continued removal of young plants is an important follow-up to controlling the plant from returning to a natural area

The prescribed fires will only be conducted if weather and other conditions are favorable. The fire will be monitored and staffed by National Park Service personnel and other cooperators.

If conditions are not favorable, an alternate day for the prescribed burns has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 8.
