This free event, co-sponsored by the Symphony of the Canyons and the National Park Service, Pipe Spring National Monument, will takeplace on the grounds of the Monument on September 21, 2013, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. MST (6:30-8:30 p.m. MDT). Please bring your own chairs. In one form or another, the Kanab based orchestra, now known as Symphony of the Canyons, has existed for 25 years. Performers vary in age from young teenagers to more than 70 and come from as far away as St. George, Utah, and Page, Arizona to share their talents and love for music. They perform about a dozen concerts each year. This will be their first concert at Pipe Spring National Monument. Symphony director Kortney Stirland has chosen a variety of music – some with western themes such as The Cowboy Overture; some from operas which, over the years, have become associated with the west, such as William Tel OvertureandLight Calvary Overture. The folk song Blue Bells of Scotlandwill feature Jack Allen on trombone and Scotland the Bravewill include bagpipes. A jazz version of Stars and Stripes Forever will complement the Armed Forces Salute. And what concert would be complete without Happy Trails? Pipe Spring National Monument isopen daily from 7:00 am – 5:00 pm AZ, with tours of historic Winsor Castle and daily ranger talks and demonstrations. The Visitor Center and Museum, jointly operated by the National Park Service and the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, features exhibits on the traditional lifeways and history of the Kaibab Band, as well as a 25 minute video, Encounter on the High Desert, on the history of the area and relationships between the pioneers and Indians.
