Fredonia, AZ – The staff of Pipe Spring National Monument is happy to be working again! Fall is a wonderful time to visit the monument - the livestock (horses, longhorns, ducks and chickens) are always glad to have visitors, the views from the Ridge Trail are especially clear in the crisp fall air, and we will be celebrating National American Indian Month during November. This is a time to celebrate and recognize tribal culture and learn about the heritage, history, art, and traditions of American Indians. Please join us for the following ranger and volunteer led hikes and talks:

November 3 & 17, 9-11 am, Mu’uputs Canyon Hike: This hike into Mu’uputs Canyon on the Kaibab Indian Reservation, an easy 2 mile round trip, focuses on the history and lifeways of the Kaibab Paiute Indians and ends at two fascinating petroglyph sites. The hikes are limited to 20 visitors; call Pipe Spring National Monument to make a reservation (928-643-7105). There is a $10 per person tribal fee for this hike.

November 8, 6:30-8:30 pm, “Stories and Stars”. Join us for an evening of stargazing and stories related to the cosmos. Park ranger and Kaibab Paiute tribal member Benn Pikyavit will share astronomical stories of the Kaibab Paiute and other cultures. The Dixie State University Astronomy Club will bring several telescopes for up close viewing of night sky objects and help us learn to identify early winter constellations and planets. Dress warmly! Bring chairs, binoculars, and flashlights.

November 10, 9-11 am, “Pah – Water in Paiute”. Join ranger Benn Pikyavit to learn the what, why and how of water at Pipe Spring for the Paiute.

November 15, 1-4 pm, “Paiute Skills and Heritage”. Join Kaibab tribal member LeAnn Shearer and her daughter Tavavee to learn about traiditional Paiute clothing, baskets, cradleboards, uses of yucca, etc.  

November 24, 9-11 am, “Powell and the Paiutes”. Learn about this interesting relationship, which took place in the late 1860s through the early 1870s, from ranger Benn Pikyavit.

Pipe Spring is located 15 miles west of Fredonia, AZ on AZ 389 or 45 miles east of Hurricane, UT on UT 59 and AZ 389. Regular entrance fees will apply ($5.00/adult, 15 and younger free). Interagency Annual, Senior, and Access passes are accepted and sold.
