Free Entry on Martin Luther King Day Holiday

Pipestone, MN: Pipestone National Monument and other National Park Service (NPS) sites, around the country, proudly join the nation in observing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day by offering fee-free entry into the parks on January 15, 2018.

Many people make New Year’s resolutions to spend more quality time with loved ones and there’s no better place than a national park to help keep those resolutions. National parks offer superb recreational opportunities, making them perfect places to enjoy our beautiful land, history, culture, and nurture a healthy lifestyle, while also spending time with loved ones.

Established by Congress in 1937 to protect the historic pipestone quarries, the site is considered sacred by many American Indians. Spanning centuries of use, American Indians continue to quarry pipestone which they carve into sacred pipes. The winter season offers many photographic opportunities of the prairie and is a perfect opportunity to explore American Indian culture and view all the natural resources of the tallgrass prairie.

The Monument Visitor Center and Pipestone Indian Shrine Association, (gift shop) located in the Visitor Center will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Monument Staff wish to remind our visitors to dress warmly and be especially careful, while walking the Circle Trail, during this time of year. The Circle Trail path can be slippery, especially on bridges & near Winniwissa Falls.
