National Park Service Superintendent Nancy Hendricks announced record visitation of 356,492 visitors in 2020. This is an increase of 62,535 visitors over the previous year. “This past year has proven to us how important the outdoors is to our health and well-being,” said Superintendent Hendricks. Most of Petroglyph’s increase in visitation was by park neighbors and the local community, confirmed by trail counters placed on secondary neighborhood access points throughout the monument.  We’d like to remind our neighbors and community members that we need your help in protecting the resources of Petroglyph. It’s easy to do by following a few simple trail etiquette rules:

  • Stick to the Trail: Protect yourself and the resources by remaining on the designated trails and adhering to area closed signs.
  • Be a B.A.R.K. Ranger: We welcome pets to most areas, but it is important to Bag your pet’s waste and dispose of it properly. Always leash your pet. Respect wildlife and Know where you can go.
  • Practice Leave No Trace™ Principles: Leave areas as you found them and dispose of waste properly.
  • Great Hikes, No Bikes!: Bicycle riding is limited to paved park roads and paved parking areas; the paved multi-use bike path at Boca Negra Canyon and the crusher fine gravel trail on the western boundary above Boca Negra Canyon; and, the access trail that crosses the western edge of the Northern Geologic Window from Paseo del Norte Blvd. NE to the Paseo de la Mesa multipurpose Trail. All other areas of the monument are closed to bicycles. The City of Albuquerque offers ample opportunities for bicycling outside the Monument – for more information, visit their website.
