Poor Creek Trail Closed Permanently

News Release Date: August 19, 2022 A section of Petersburg National Battlefield’s Poor Creek Trail has been closed permanently due to ongoing safety concerns. The area of the trail located between Gracie's Salient (near tour stop 5) and Fort Haskell (tour stop 6) has eroded due to heavy rain. The trail’s sloping landscape creates a high risk of further erosion which can create a safety hazard for visitors. Petersburg National Battlefield continues to maintain miles of trails which remain suitable for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. The Eastern Front Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield is the location where Union troops made their first major attacks on the City of Petersburg in mid-June 1864. The Unit includes an 8-stop, four-mile tour road which allows visitors also walk the grounds where the Battles of the Fort Stedman (Stop 5) and the Crater (Stop 8) were fought. The Eastern Front Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield is located at 5001 Siege Road in Petersburg and there is no fee to enter the park.Petersburg National Battlefield was created in order to commemorate the campaign and siege and defense of Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864 and 1865.
