About the American Battlefield Trust and Park Day
The American Battlefield Trust is a national nonprofit land preservation organization that protects America's hallowed battlegrounds. It saves the battlefields of the Civil War, Revolutionary War, and War of 1812. It educates the public about their importance in forging our nation.

American Battlefield Trust created Park Day in 1996. Each year thousands of people volunteer in an annual hands-on preservation event to help Civil War — and now Revolutionary War & War of 1812 — battlefields and historic sites take on maintenance projects large and small. This event allows the Trust to spotlight beloved American landscapes nationwide. Projects will keep historic sites and battlefields clean, open, and accessible.

About Poplar Grove National Cemetery
Poplar Grove National Cemetery, located at 8005 Vaughan Road in Petersburg, was established in 1866. Prior to the Civil War, the land where the cemetery now exists, belonged to Reverend Thomas B. Flowers. During the Civil War, the future cemetery grounds were used as a campground by the 50th New York Engineers during the Siege of Petersburg. Today, there are close to 6,200 soldiers buried in the cemetery, however only 2,139 have been positively identified.

Petersburg National Battlefield was created in order to commemorate the campaign and siege and defense of Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864 and 1865. The park staff is committed to preserving and protecting the historical, cultural, and natural resources within the park in a manner that will provide interpretation, education, and enjoyment for the visitors. For more information about events at Petersburg National Battlefield, please check our website at www.nps.gov/pete and follow us on social media.
